The drug has an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract and genitourinary tract. As a derivative of a quaternary ammonium compound, hyoscine butylbromide does not enter the central nervous system. Therefore, anticholinergic side effects from the central nervous system do not occur. Peripheral anticholinergic effects are due to ganglioblocking action in the vascular wall, as well as antimuscarinic activity.
