A synthetic antifungal agent with a broad spectrum of action. It has fungicidal and fungistatic activity against dermatophytes (trichophyton spp., epidermophyton fl., mycosporum spp.), yeasts (candida spp., pityrosporum spp.). Aspergillus spp., Sporothrix scheckii and other fucomycetes (except Entomophthrales) are less sensitive to ketoconazole. Ketoconazole is also active against gram-positive cocci (staphylococcus spp., streptococcus spp.). The mechanism of action is to inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol and change the lipid composition of the fungal membrane.
