Galantamine belongs to the tertiary alkaloids of the group of indirect parasympathomimetics. It is a selective competitive and reversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It causes an increase in the level of acetylcholine in the central nervous system. In addition to its action as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, it is an allosteric ligand of the most widespread nicotinic acetylcholine receptors of the alpha 4/beta 2 subtype in the central nervous system, directly stimulating nicotinic receptors.
